Charges in Electric Fields – Practice

Questions:

1) What acceleration would a proton experience if it was travelling in an electric field of strength 9.6 × 10−6 NC−1? (qp = 1.602 × 10−19 C and mp = 1.673 × 10−27 kg)

2) An electric field with a strength of 200 Vm−1 is created between charged plates with a voltage of 9V between them. What is the distance between the plates?

3a) Calculate the work done on a proton that moves 2.5cm between charged plates with an electric field strength of 40Vm−1: (qp = 1.602 × 10−19 C)

b) If the proton was initially at rest, calculate its final velocity: (mp = 1.673 × 10−27 kg)

 4. A pair of parallel plates are separated by a distance of 2.0cm. An electron travelling at 1.6 ×107 m/s enters the middle of the plates and experiences a force as a result of an electric field where one plate is earthed and the other at a potential of 2.5 kV. Calculate the horizontal displacement of the electron before it hits the plate: (qe = -1.602 × 10−19 C and me = 9.109 × 10−31 kg)

Quick Answers:

1) 920 m/s2

2) 4.5 cm

3a) 1.602 × 10−19 J    b) 13840 m/s

4) 1.5 cm
